The medicines on several counters are filled with filth because instead of curing diseases, they make our health worse. We are filled with a lot of uncertainty as to whether we will get better by taking those drugs or not.

Therefore, instead of worrying, we need to make radical changes regarding how we treat our bodies. Rather than fill them with filthy medicines, let us go natural.

Yesterday, we talked about medicinal herbs we need to grow in our homes. Today, I add essential oils to the list of natural remedies.

A mixture of herbs and essential oils is a sure way to keep your family and surroundings healthy and great for you.

Here are some essential oils you may want to have in close reach;

Common Essential Oils 

Tea tree essential oil


This is a great oil but should never be taken internally. It is also not suitable for small babies or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.


  • treats toenail fungus, dandruff, boils, warts, insect bites, and head lice
  • fights vaginal infections
  • clears chest congestion
  • eliminates body odour
  • improves oral health
  • it is an effective insect repellent

If your skin is not sensitive, you can dampen a cotton swab, add a drop of the oil then rub it on the affected area.

Rosemary essential oil


It has got a strong, fresh, camphor-like aroma mainly used for cosmetic and house cleaning uses. However, it is not suitable for pregnant women, for people suffering from epilepsy and hypertension and for anyone taking homoeopathic medicines.


  • used for aromatherapy as it boosts memory, deals with mood swings, and several psychological issues
  • it is a potent antioxidant
  • antiseptic hence support oral health. Add 2-3 drops of rosemary oil to a glass of lukewarm water to use it as a mouthwash.
  • has got anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties that help relieve respiratory problems
  • reduces muscle pain
  • soothes digestive uses
  • fights vaginal infections
  • reduces headaches
  • treats coughs
  • stimulates hair follicles and boosts hair growth. Add 2-3 drops of rosemary oil to a carrier oil then massage your hair and scalp.

Rosemary essential oil is a strong oil. Therefore, using it alongside a carrier oil is a great idea.

Peppermint essential oil


It has got a strong, penetrating menthol aroma with a sweet undertone. It possesses anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, astringent, antifungal, antimicrobial, antiseptic and expectorant properties hence providing many health benefits.


  • relieves stomachaches
  • treats digestive issues and heartburn
  • cures bad breath
  • relieves headaches. Rub 2-3 drops of the oil on your forehead and temples for relief.
  • improves mental health
  • treats respiratory problems
  • helps to reduce anger
  • eases depression
  • combats fatigue, stress and anxiety. Put some drops of the oil into your handkerchief and inhale on a regular basis
  • boosts one’s moods
  • keeps rodents out of your property, not to mention ants and cockroaches. Put a few drops on a cotton ball and place it in their path or entry areas.

It can be inhaled or used externally

However, desist from using this oil in excess as it has got side effects such as headaches and heartburn.

Lavender essential oil


It is a calming oil with a floral smell that draws people in. It has got antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antidepressant properties.


  • treats anxiety
  • treats respiratory problems. Drop some lavender oil into a humidifier
  • treats minor burns
  • treats wounds, insect bites and stings
  • treats earaches
  • treats acne
  • treats hair loss and several women’s health issues.
  • repels mosquitoes. Add 2-3 drops of the oil to a carrier oil say olive oil and apply to your skin.
  • helps to alleviate headaches, stress, and insomnia. For better sleep patterns, 2-3 drops of the oil onto your pillow or handkerchief for inhaling will do the trick

It is used both internally and externally

Oregano essential oil


Known to have culinary and health benefits,the oil has got a warm spicy herbaceous and camphoraceous scent.  The main components in this oil are thymol, terpinene, cymene and carvacrol.  It possesses antifungal, antibacterial, diaphoretic, antiseptic, expectorant, anti-inflammatory, mild tonic, antiparasitic, carminative and antioxidant properties. These make it very beneficial to your health

  • deals with herpes

Eucalyptus essential oil


It has got a mild pungent yet sweet and refreshing aroma. It is often used as an ingredient in manufacturing inhalers, mouthwashes, liniments, and vapour rubs. It has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, decongestant, antiseptic, stimulating, disinfectant,  analgesic, antispasmodic, deodorant, and antibacterial properties making it a medicinal essential oil.

  • relieves congestion
  • used in aromatherapy hence treating several respiratory issues like asthma, sinus pain, respiratory tract infections. Add 2-3 drops of the oil into a pan of boiling water and inhale the steam

  • increases one’s concentration
  • relieves  stress
  • acts as a repellant and biopesticide
  • eliminates germs and odour. Add a few drops of the oil into a bottle of water and spray in bathrooms and kitchens
  • used to add flavour to cooking, confectionery, baking, beverages, and meat products

Lemon essential oil


It has a refreshing scent, like one from a freshly peeled lemon. It has got antiviral,  antidepressant,  detoxifying,  carminative,  astringent,  antihistamine,  sleep-inducing,  antibacterial properties hence qualifying it to have health benefits.

It is used as an ingredient in soaps, body lotions, perfumes, face washes, and  scented candles.

  • improves one’s breath. Add 2-3 drops of the oil a glass of water and use it as a mouthwash.

  • great for pregnant women as it helps with nausea and vomiting

Chamomile essential oil (Roman)


It has got a warm fruity scent and is a common ingredient in aromatherapy and beauty products. It has got hepatic, digestive, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, emmenagogue, bactericidal,  sedative,  antibiotic, antidepressant, anti-infectious,  carminative,  antispasmodic and calming properties.


  • treats boils
  • relieves bee stings
  • treats dry skin
  • treats eczema
  • relieves bruises
  • treats burns
  • treats dermatitis
  • deals with insomnia. Use the oil in a diffused form
  • relieves stress and anxiety
  • deals with irritability and depression more so that brought on by menopause or PMS
  • treats diaper rash
  • deals with sunburn
  • deals with bad breath. Add a few drops of the oil to warm water
  • treats tonsillitis and dental abscesses
  • eases muscle pain. Add 2-3 drops of the oil to your massage oil and massage the affected areas

To deal with skin problems, the oils is used topically either in a diluted or undiluted form

For diaper rash or burns, add a few drops of the oil to any cream you are using

To make a mouthwash, add a few drops of the oil to warm water

However, if you are allergic to ragweed, do not use this oil

Clove essential oil

Clove-Essential-Oil.jpgIt has got a rather strong and sharp earthy scent. It possesses antifungal,  stimulating, antiseptic,  antiparasitic,  analgesic,  anti-inflammatory, analgesic,  antibacterial properties.

Clove oil is very strong. Therefore, you need to dilute it before using it on your skin.


  • Treats athlete’s foot
  • treats fungal infections
  • treats asthma
  • deals with indigestion
  • treats toothaches and gum issues. Put a drop or 2 of the oil on a cotton ball and rub it on the sore tooth plus the surrounding gum.
  • repels mosquitos and other insects. Add 2-3 drops of the oil into a diffuser.
  • treats earaches
  • relieves headaches
  • deals with prickly heat rash

However, pregnant women plus those with kidney or liver problems can not use this oil. People allergic to eugenol can not use it either as it is the main component of the oil.

Frankincense essential oil


It possesses as a woodsy, warm and balsamic scent. It is a great oil because of its disinfectant, carminative, disinfectant, diuretic,  sedative,  antiseptic,  expectorant,  antiseptic and astringent properties.


  • treats minor burns
  • treats wrinkles
  • helps with scar tissues
  • treats insect bites
  • treats boils
  • relieves scrapes
  • reduces anxiety and stress
  • fights stress
  • promotes sleep
  • used for massage
  • relieves nasal congestion. Put 2-3 drops of the oil into a handkerchief and inhale
  • treats migraines and headaches
  • reduces pain from arthritis and menstrual periods as well as general body pains. Add a few drops of the oil to your bath water
  • it is a repellant. Put some drops of the oil in a humidifier.
  • stops cancer from spreading

Before using this oil on your skin, it is advisable to dilute it using a carrier oil.
